He aquí las principales pandemias del último siglo: En el siglo XX la gripe A provocó tres grandes pandemias. Entre 1918 y 1919, la llamada &#8216;gripe española&#8217; afectó a buena parte de la población mundial y causó al menos 40 millones de muertos, según la OMS. Las pandemias siguientes fueron menos mortales pero la gripe asiática, entre 1957 y 1958, provocó la muerte de cuatro millones de personas. En 1968-69, la gripe de Hong Kong, provocó dos millones de muertos. Desde principios del siglo XXI, varias epidemias estallaron sin causar tantos muertos como las pandemias del siglo anterior. La epidemia de neumonía atípica (SRAS), que apareció en la provincia china de Guangdong (sur) en noviembre de 2002, afectó a 8.000 personas y causó más de 800 muertos en todo el mundo, de los cuales casi 350 en China. Desde su aparición en 2003, la cepa H5N1 del virus de la gripe aviar, mató a más de 250 personas, principalmente en el sureste asiático. Por otra parte, las epidemias anuales de gripe son temidas, pues una parte importante de la población se ve afectada por ese virus, cuya mutación es muy rápida, produciendo a menudo nuevas cepas contra las <b>&#8230;</b></p>
